no journal, ,

Radioactive material was released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F) and deposited in the surrounding area. Radioactive cesium is thought to affect coastal areas via rivers. This tendency is remarkable when the river water level increase due to a typhoon. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the influence of rivers on the dynamics of radioactive cesium in coastal areas. In this study, we used sediment traps to collect sinking particles in coastal areas and investigated the dynamics of radioactive cesium.

The coefficient for converting from the air dose rate to a radiocesium inventory with relaxation mass depth ($$beta$$) is proposed by Monte Carlo simulation. We confirm the validity of the conversion coefficient based on vertical distribution of radiocesium in soil and air dose rate obtained by contract research supported by the Nuclear Regulation Authority. The estimated radiocesium inventories based on air dose rate and $$beta$$ values ($$beta$$ and $$beta$$$$_{ICRU}$$) were defined as CI$$_{R}$$ and CI$$_{ICRU}$$, respectively. Each CI were compared with integrated radiocesium inventory (MI) in soil samples. Good agreement was observed between CI$$_{R}$$ and MI. This result suggested that the method for estimating radiocesium inventory based on $$beta$$ and air dose rate is applicable to environment in Fukushima. By contrast, CI$$_{ICRU}$$ was overestimated compared with MI due to the trend of $$beta$$ derived from difference of soil characteristics between Fukushima and Chernobyl.

Future works on radiation transport simulations

Kurikami, Hiroshi

no journal, ,

JAEA operates RESET, a system that predicts decontamination effects to support local government decontamination plans. In the next phase, we continue research on radiation assessment using advanced radiation transport simulation tools such as 3D-ADRES.

no journal, ,

JAEA is running the website named FaCEIS, in that we arrange the information about environmental radioactivity and air dose rate originated by FDNPP accident. We JAEA provide the information with scientific base to serve the knowledge and safety about Fukushima environment.
